The City and County of Denver's Department of Public Safety (DOS) is offering a unique opportunity to four college students to work part-time while earning your educational equivalency gaining real-world experience in civic government. This opportunity was developed to give students the opportunity for a hands-on experience with City staff, learn about local government, and gain professional experience while going to school. In addition, this experience will allow you to make essential contributions and bring new ideas to the City while working in one of our Public Safety departments. While this internship is open to both in & out of state candidates, we are looking for candidates who understand Denver communities and their potential needs.

The internship program is year-round with 3-month rotational opportunities that align with the quarterly collegiate schedule.

Internship periods:

1/1-3/31 (Winter), 4/1-6/31 (Spring), 7/1-9/31 (Summer), 10/1-12/31 (Fall)

The internship is unpaid and offers schedule flexibility for the 8-16 hours a week, typically in one or two eight-hour days. City Employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. All persons offered a position will be required to provide valid proof of vaccination before starting employment.

Interns will be involved in supporting the Executive Director of the Safety Office (EDOS). Interns will rotate between 4 different areas of the EDOS office:

Records Administration
  • Communication: Exercise sound judgment in reviewing, communicating, sharing, and editing documents related to public safety
  • Records Management: Review, redact and format case files, body-worn camera footage, emails, discipline orders, and other content in response to records requests
  • Agency Support: Assist the Civil Liabilities Unit and public safety agencies in responding to requests, including requests under the Colorado Open Records Act
  • Assist the Records Administrator with other projects and requests depending on the needs of the Department and interest areas of the Intern

Performance Management
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Assist the Assistant Deputy Director and his team with collecting, analyzing, and understanding data related to efforts to address homelessness within the City and County of Denver
  • Performance Management: Identify and use key performance indicators (KPI) to make evidence-based performance management plans and identify areas for program improvement
  • Coordination: Work with Department of Safety and City agencies to ensure proper inter-agency coordination regarding responses to encampments
  • Assist the Assistant Deputy Director with other data related and performance management projects as needed

Policy & Transformation
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Assist the DOS Transformation and Policy team with data collection, analysis, and interpretation
  • Community Engagement: Create a Community Engagement Plan to effectively facilitate citizen engagement, input, and understanding of DOS Transformation and Policy initiatives
  • Public Health: Provide a public health lens to the team's initiatives, reviewing proposals, data, and communications
  • Policy Analysis: Review and recommend policies and policy proposals based on the initiatives and focus areas of the DOS
  • Assist the Transformation & Policy Director and team with other projects as needed

  • Social Media: Develop a social media content calendar for the Denver Department of Public Safety's social media accounts, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram
  • Content Creation: Create content for and draft social media posts
  • Video Production: Assist with video creation and photography at Department events and in the field
  • Newsletters & Web Copy: Draft content for the DOS Newsletter and website
  • Assist Communications Director with other communications projects as needed, including media responses

Additionally, interns are eligible for qualifying credit education equivalency towards units in an undergraduate/graduate program upon completing the internship program. Interested applicants should prepare a Cover Letter and a Resume. Please describe when you faced a challenging situation, how you handled the situation, and the outcome within the cover letter. The entire cover letter needs to be 350 words or less.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education requirement: Enrolled in an undergraduate program at a Sophomore level or higher. Primary areas: Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Experience Requirement: Prior experience performing administrative, clerical, or customer service related tasks.

  • GPA of 3.0
  • Pursuing a major in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Public Health, or a related field
  • Be at least 18 years of age at the date of application
  • Strong understanding of Denver communities and their potential needs
