The Vallejo Police Department is undergoing a cultural shift to 21st Century Community Policing. Our Cadet Program is intended to provide young men and women with an opportunity to learn police operations with that philosophy in mind, and in preparation for pursuing a career with the Vallejo Police Department. We are seeking individuals interested in making a difference in the community, and who are eager to participate in a high level of community collaboration!

This recruitment is a continuous recruitment and will be closed when a viable candidate pool has been identified.

In this temporary position, Police Cadets are expected to perform a variety of community policing work (including civilian, field, and office tasks) in direct support of safety and non-safety personnel.

Employees in this pre-trainee level, non-safety position, work on a part-time/as needed basis, while attending an accredited college toward earning their Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field. Police Cadets who successfully obtain said degree may attend, at the Department's expense, a police academy with the ultimate goal of earning a Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) certificate.

Those who do not obtain the educational requirements within three years may be released.

The City of Vallejo is located in Solano County and has a population of approximately 121,000 residents. Vallejo is a rapidly changing, highly diverse community located midway between the cities of San Francisco and Sacramento. It is a friendly, active waterfront community that attracts innovative, hardworking people and takes great pride in its 148-year history and maritime heritage. This class is distinguished from the Police Officer (Recruit) class in that the latter is the trainee level class participating in the POST Basic Academy, and the former is the pre-trainee level in preparation for the POST Basic Academy. It is further differentiated from the uniformed, safety, police-related classes by their designation and the responsibilities and authorities associated with a safety peace officer designation under the laws of the State of California.

This is a part-time, temporary, at will position exempt from the classified service.

Receives direct supervision from supervisory and management staff.
Examples of Duties
-The following duties are considered essential to the Police Cadet class:
  • Take police reports for crimes such as bicycle theft, automobile theft, burglary or similar cold complaints
  • Marks and arranges for the towing of abandoned vehicles
  • Enforces parking regulations by issuing traffic citations
  • Performs traffic and pedestrian control as directed
  • Participates in crime prevention activities such as neighborhood watch meetings, school and community group presentations, and Police Department building tours
  • Attends weekend and/or evening training sessions
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required
Cadet Rotations and Assignments may vary within the following divisions and may include:
  • Evidence
  • Investigations
  • Prisoner Transport
  • Patrol
  • Community Services Section (CSS)
  • School Resource Officer
  • Traffic

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of :
  • Techniques for working with the public in a tactful, respectful, and collaborative manner
  • Techniques for gaining trust and getting people to cooperate using reason
  • Proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
Ability to :
  • Learn the organization and functions of a Police Department
  • Learn and apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies, practices and methods
  • Work courteously with the general public on the telephone and in-person
  • Work with the public collaboratively, respectfully, courteously, and tactfully
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent with a minimum 2.0 GPA. AND currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and taking a minimum of 12 semester / 18 quarter units toward earning an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or a related field while maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA.

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license
  • Be between 18 and 23 years of age at the time of application
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes with normal color vision
  • Must be eligible for U.S. citizenship upon academy graduation
  • No felony convictions
  • No misdemeanor convictions which mandate weapons prohibitions

Background Investigation :
Candidates for the position of Police Cadet are required to pass a background investigation in accordance with applicable law, regulation and/or policy. During the background investigation candidates are required to complete and submit a State of California Personal History Statement (POST Form 2-251 Rev. 02/2013). The information that you provide in the Personal History Statement will be used in the background investigation to assist in determining your suitability for the position of Police Cadet, in accordance with POST Commission Regulation 1953. Additionally, for the position of Police Cadet, a pre-placement psychological and medical examination, including drug screening, is required prior to employment.
