SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Central New York Chapter was founded in response to communities protesting the demolition of their homes in response to the building of interstate 81 in Syracuse's Southside.

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) seeks well-qualified candidates for the full-time position of Central New York Chapter Director. This role is based in Syracuse, New York, and is responsible for monitoring and responding to civil liberties and civil rights issues in Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, Seneca, Oswego, Cortland and Cayuga counties, and carrying out the mission and priorities of the headquarters office.

Reporting to the Director of Chapters, the Chapter Director directly supervises a part-time administrative assistant, and works closely with local advocacy groups, statewide NYCLU staff, and a local volunteer advisory board to maintain a strong civil liberties voice in the region. Candidate will possess a proactive, energetic, multi-tasking work temperament with a passion for and knowledge of civil liberties issues. They will be a self-starter, have existing relationships or the ability to quickly build those relationships, and will be the principal organizational representative.

The NYCLU's Chapters Department works to advance and defend civil rights and civil liberties across the state. The Department is comprised of 7 chapter offices located throughout New York State, each with a Chapter Director and Administrative Assistant, as well as Organizers and Deputy Directors in certain chapter offices.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be a key voice for civil rights and liberties in the region.
  • • Manage a small office and supervise staff, volunteers and interns, oversee annual budget, meet deadlines and engage in regular communication with NYCLU staff around the state, submit biweekly activity reports, assume responsibility for lease, physical plant and equipment maintenance.
  • • Identify and cultivate community members, volunteers, elected officials, and influencers to support NYCLU's work. Recruit and sustain NYCLU members and supporters through event planning, outreach, and visibility in the region.
  • • Monitor and respond to systemic civil liberties concerns within the region using a range of strategies, including public education, community organizing, legislative and lobbying work, public events and rallies, building partnerships with local organizations, and writing and delivering public testimony.
  • • Respond to and refer calls for legal assistance, identify and match intake trends to NYCLU priorities and mission, and work with NYC staff to identify appropriate remedies.
  • • Collaborate with our Development department, identify and build relationships with key donors, plan fundraising events, and support grant-writing efforts.
  • • Collaborate with our Communications Department, maintain a social media presence, respond to media inquiries, support e-activism, and manage an events calendar.
  • • Collaborate with the Policy, Field, and Education Center teams to advance NYCLU's priorities and mission throughout the state.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in 1 or more of the following areas:
    • Community organizing
    • Legislative advocacy, lobbying, or government relations
    • Law or public policy
    • Campaign or strategic planning
    • Research
  • Must have a valid driver's license and consistent access ta vehicle
  • Demonstrated public speaking experience
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Zoom.
  • Familiarity with the Central New York region.
  • Willing and available twork occasional weekends and/or evenings
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of the NYCLU's mission and a demonstrated commitment tcivil rights and racial justice; will have nonprofit management experience, including staff supervision and volunteer cultivation; will have demonstrated skills in grasstops and grassroots community organizing; will have proven track record and campaign experience, including leadership on legislative advocacy/policy work; and will have expertise in one or more civil liberties issue areas (e.g. racial justice, first amendment, privacy rights, criminal justice, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration reform, student rights).
