The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department currently has openings for a Professional Engineer in the Transportation Maintenance and Repair Division, Transportation Engineering & Design, and Water Treatment & Distribution.

Perform a variety of professional engineering work in the preparation of plans and specifications for engineering projects, supervision of construction projects and the maintenance of facilities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide project management and coordination for construction projects and/or repair efforts.
• Provide engineering design work, creating preliminary plan sets that individuals constructing the infrastructure can follow ensuring that designs meet Federal, State and Local guidelines.
• Prepare contractual documents and assist in the hiring of contractors and consultants.
• Oversee and manage the work of consultants and contractors on construction and reconstruction projects.
• Obtain appropriate approvals and permits necessary for projects/initiatives.
• Establish priorities to ensure that projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
• Coordinate with private utilities, local businesses and residents to ensure that infrastructures will meet their needs and negotiate and develop cooperative agreements and special revisions necessary.
• Supervise and monitor the work of subordinates engaged in a variety of projects/initiatives to ensure compliance with existing guidelines.
• Participate in the preparation and monitoring of budgets.
• Work with other agencies, jurisdictions, organizations and businesses on projects and initiatives.
• Participate in meetings as a technical representative of the City of Minneapolis.
• Perform research, prepare reports, give presentations, and write proposals.

Transportation Maintenance and Repair
Additional duties and responsibilities include:

• Manage and/or assist city field crews, hired consultants and private contractors performing roadway construction and maintenance in the public right of way.
• Able to create bidding documents, manage contractors, approve payments, prepare MnDOT project documentation and perform contract closeouts for a municipal government.
• Able to evaluate, problem solve and create design solutions for field problems on a construction project.
• Able to work and schedule with private public utilities, transit companies and other users of the public right of way in construction projects.
• Understand public funding strategies combining; net debt bonds, assessment bonds, municipal state aid, financial revenue and expense streams and activity based cost accounting.
• Understand and assist in the implementation of the City of Minneapolis 2040 Action plan, vision zero and Federal ADA Pedestrian Ramp installation.

Water Treatment and Distribution Services

• Experience with water, pipe and pump hydraulic calculations.
• Experience with the planning, design, and construction of pipelines through areas with conflicting buried utilities and surface facilities.
• Experience with surface restoration, including bituminous paving, concrete paving, turf, parkland, and yards.
• Experience with protection of existing aesthetic environments, protection of trees, and designs to minimize visual impacts of new infrastructure.
• Fundamental knowledge and application of Federal and State laws, regulations and standards applying to public water supply systems, drinking water quality and construction site storm water quality protection.

Transportation Engineering and Design
Construction Engineering:

• The ideal candidate will have experience performing environmental engineering
• Preparing correspondence with the MPCA to obtain environmental assurances on construction projects
• Performing environmental Phase 1 investigations
• Conducting and overseeing environmental Phase II - limited site investigations
• Preparing construction contingency plans and response action plans prior to construction
• Providing on-site construction observation and environmental screening of potentially impacted soils
• Training and supervising engineering technicians to perform environmental testing
• Managing construction projects
• Perform other related duties assigned

Roadway Design:

• Experience or knowledge in transportation design and project management
• Manage design staff and/or design consultants
• Work on a multi-discipline team
• Good communication skills. Able to speak in front of a large group and give formal presentations to large groups.
• Ability to work with project stakeholders
• Assist with managing construction projects
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college.

MINUMUM EXPERIENCE :
Four years of engineering related experience

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS :

• As a condition of continued employment, registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota is required within 6 months of hire.
  

• Possess and continue to maintain a valid driver's license.

Selection Process: The examination/selection process for this position may consist of a rating of training and experience and/or an oral exam (100%). Minimum passing score is 70.00.
