Position Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Automation Engineering Team at Seattle City Light in the Seattle Municipal Tower. The Automation and Relay Group is responsible for integrating new technologies into our transmission and distribution systems. It is currently focused on two major areas: substation automation (SA) and distribution automation (DA). SA employs IP-based networking technologies within the substation to facilitate device interconnection and data exchange. This methodology will be rolled out in full at the new Denny Substation, now being fully commissioned. The DA program deploys modern electrical, control, and communication systems at distribution feeders and enables fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR) functionality.

This position will report to the Automation and Relay Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities

The Automation Assistant Engineer will work with the staff in the Automation and Relay unit and will complete the following duties:
  • Serve as the assistant project engineer and coordinator for SA integration within the Denny Substation and Distribution Automation projects
  • Assist with coordination of construction and commissioning activities between SCL and various consultants and contractors
  • Assist with coordination of hardware and software configuration of distribution and substation control equipment including distribution switch controllers, remote terminal units (RTU), human-machine interfaces (HMI), IP networking equipment
  • Develop complete project design packages including electrical control schematics, arrangement drawings, wiring diagrams, and other electrical drawings; SA and DA applications configuration; HMI design and programming; IP network and serial communications design and configuration
  • Develop test procedures and coordination of systems testing and commissioning
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and operational technology (OT) teams and provide instructions to field crews and answer questions concerning systems design issues for crews, contractors, engineers, customers, and the public
  • Assist with preparation of preliminary and long-range plans, estimates, budgets, material requirements, specifications, work orders and instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, special conditions and agreements.
  • Participate in presentations, special projects and assignments as directed
  • Be able to read and interpret complex Federal, State and Local regulations, laws, codes and guidelines.
  • Have good technical writing skills
  • Perform other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned


Education: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional electrical engineering.

Certification/License: Current Washington State driver's license.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents.
  • Familiar with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
  • Utility or electrical work experience in underground and/or overhead electrical distribution design
  • BSEE focused on power systems
  • Good computer skills especially with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, WAMS, PI Historian, or similar applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities and to work as a team member in a diverse workforce
  • Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively and independently.
  • Ability and eagerness to learn and overcome new challenges
