RESTRICTED TO EMPLOYEES OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE RECRUIT TRAINING PROGRAM.
THIS EXAMINATION IS SPECIFICALLY FOR FIRE FIGHTER TRAINEES OF THE 153RDRECRUIT CLASS.

Essential Job Functions
Performs fire fighting and rescue duties in all types of fires and in other emergency situations, and enforces the Fire Prevention Code.
Positions allocable to this class receive technical and administrative supervision from Fire Captains and perform a full range of fire fighting and related duties on an assigned shift. These positions must respond immediately at any hour of the day or night, in any weather, to combat life or property threatening emergencies. Incumbents typically work under hazardous conditions, such as those that involve exposure to fire and smoke. All positions in this class require the physical stamina to perform such strenuous activities as ascending or descending ladders while carrying victims or equipment in order to effect rescues, as well as the ability to manipulate equipment, such as fire hoses, power tools and hand tools. Incumbents must exercise working knowledge of fire fighting principles and techniques, the Fire Prevention Code, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) I principles and techniques, and the proper use of fire fighting and EMT tools and equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Fights structural, watershed, chemical, petroleum, electrical and other fires.
Assists in the rescue or evacuation of persons endangered by fire or disaster.
Assesses patient's condition and provides basic emergency life support services.
Makes pre-fire plan inspections and assists in enforcing the Fire Code, making fire prevention inspections, issuing citations and testifying in court as required.
Operates fire apparatus and equipment as required in emergency or relief situations.
May perform as a paramedic on a mobile intensive care unit.
May operate a pick-up truck equipped with radio, water storage tank and pump.
Performs relief duties such as maintaining station records and equipment.
Completion of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Recruit Training Program AND an Emergency Medical Technician I certification.
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions*. Fire Fighter endorsement, tank endorsements, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions is required within twelve months from the date of appointment.
A valid Class A or B Driver License with Fire Fighter endorsement, tank endorsements with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions may be required for some positions in this class.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
4 - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
EXAMINATION CONTENT :
This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience weighted 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added to the eligible list.
Final scores will be sent by U.S. mail. Test scores cannot be given over the phone.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION :
In accordance with Civil Service Rules, names of candidates receiving apassing score will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their scoregroup for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
In accordance with CivilService Rule 6.02(A)(3), temporary employees in training programs approved by the director of personnel may be allowed to compete in promotional examinations for permanent appointment to the class for which they have been prepared.
