Acute Communicable Disease Control (ACDC) Program is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of PHN that will be assigned to the Training and Response Unit. The PHN will assist in the development and maintenance of public health emergency response plans and protocols, and ensures the integrity of equipment and supplies for emergency response. The PHN coordinates, participates and provides trainings on emergency response to communicable diseases, including bioterrorist agents, novel pathogens, and emerging infectious diseases (e.g., Ebola, Anthrax, Smallpox, etc.). The position assists with planning, developing and evaluating of exercise drills for public health emergency response. The PHN engages, networks and collaborates with DPH representatives, other program representatives and external partners regarding public health emergency response and training. This position will be involved in infectious disease outbreak investigation, including interview of patients and specimen collection of potential bioterrorist agents or emerging infectious diseases in the field and hospital setting.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develops and maintains public health emergency response plans and protocols, and ensures equipment and supplies for emergency response.
  • Participates in emergency preparedness training and exercises.
  • Assists with disease outbreak investigations in the community and hospital setting.
  • Assists with the development and training of various topics, such disease investigations of smallpox virus and anthrax.

Must currently be a permanent Los Angeles County employee who holds the payroll item ofPublic Health Nurse.

  • Current, active license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • A State Public Health Nurse certificate.
  • California Class C Driver's License.

  • Minimum of 1-2 years Public Health Nurse experience.
  • Public health investigation experience for a variety of communicable diseases as well as in outbreak settings.
  • Experience in infection control in healthcare facilities.
  • Experience in training healthcare professionals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with an ability to perform multiple tasks and establish priorities.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly motivated and takes initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and Access data bases.
