Candidate must have a High School Diploma or GED and graduation from a certified program for nursing assistants or medical assistants and one (1) year of experience as a certified nursing assistant, patient care tech or medical assistant in a hospital, public health/community clinic or a physician's office.
Licenses and Certificates : Must hold at least one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification from American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification from the National Health Career Association (NHA), National Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certificate through the National Center for Competency Testing or Certification from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services as a nursing assistant in the State of Texas and a valid Texas Class C Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
Under direction, provide assistance in clinic settings and assist the nurse with examinations and treatments of patients. Perform responsible clerical duties including front desk registration and answering phone calls.
Follow well defined procedures/protocols to facilitate clinic services and assist clinicians during examinations. Prompt patients to answer health questions and complete forms; reinforce basic information about hygiene, birth control, sexual education, nutrition, etc. Prepare room for examination; provide technical assistance during examination, anticipating instrument needs. Performs patient measurements, tests and screening such as blood pressure, sputum, hearing, vision, urinalysis, pregnancy, TB, iron, glucose, lead, etc. Performs routine adult venipuncture and routine adult and pediatric capillary sticks. Dispense medications and administer injections, including immunizations, as ordered by physician verbally, in writing or by standing delegation orders.
Clean, set up & restock exam rooms; sterilize instruments; inventories and order supplies. Maintain logs, files and records; collect clinical data and compile statistics. Assist with registration of patients and answer telephone calls. Provide patient education. Schedule appointments and diagnostic testing, clarify referrals and re-verify appointments for various clinic programs.
Prepare infectious waste for disposal. Prepare reports and document laboratory results in patient records. Collect and record patient payments, complete deposit form and count receipts to prepare bank deposit. Answer telephone, greet clinic customers, assist in routine clerical duties, and operate common office machines including computers.

Salary Range: $12.65 - $17.79 per hour.
The starting salary is generally at the beginning of the salary range.
Please note: This is an unclassified, contract position. Employment is predicated on continued state/federal funding.
Please note: Current vacancy is at the Health Department- Immunizations Program and requires a Medical Assistant certification. However, this eligible list could be used to fill positions requiring other certifications in the Health department.
